What Intake does

Intake is a race-fuelling planner built for ultramarathon runners. Enter your goal time and answer a short questionnaire (three minutes) covering gut sensitivity, sweat rate, salt loss, caffeine tolerance and expected weather — the app builds your carb, fluid, sodium and caffeine ranges from real endurance sports-science research, scaled to who you are.

Then work your way through the course. Every climb, every aid station, every cutoff is analysed for your race and split into planning-ready sections. Drop gels, chews, drink mixes and real food onto every section from a full product library; the math updates live as you build. Aid stations come pre-loaded with the drinks and food actually on offer, plus every tap, stream and fountain in between.

Runners preparing for a specific race who want a fuelling plan grounded in the course itself — not a generic per-hour target. First-ultra runners, mid-pack racers, and front-of-field competitors all use the same tool; the recommendations shift based on your profile and goal time.

What makes Intake different

Most race-fuelling tools are generic calculators — enter your weight and sweat rate, get per-hour carb, fluid and sodium targets, and distribute them across your race yourself. Intake sells you a race instead. Each pack is a full guide to one specific ultramarathon: its actual course, every aid station and the drinks and food it serves, every cutoff, the terrain broken into planning sections, and split times drawn from real finishers who paced that course well at your goal time.

The practical difference: you don't have to work out how the per-hour target maps to your race. Intake maps it for you, so every section already knows its own carb, fluid and sodium target based on the terrain and how long you'll take. Your planning time goes on picking the products you'll actually use, not doing arithmetic.

Intake also ships a printable crew handover PDF — one page per aid station telling your crew exactly what to hand you, mix, or swap out. Works offline. Where most planners stop at "here's your carb-per-hour target," Intake ends at the crew brief on your crew captain's dashboard.

How Intake works — the data and method

Intake is a course-aware fuelling model, not a generic per-hour calculator. Each race pack ingests the official UTMB course data (elevation profile, aid station positions, cutoff times, drink and food served at each aid) and combines it with the historical finisher database for that race — thousands of real finishers with their per-mat split times, filtered to runners who paced the course evenly rather than blowing up early.

The split predictor works like this: for a runner's goal time, the model finds the neighbouring band of historical finishers who paced the course well at that time, and distributes that pace pattern across the terrain metre by metre — gradient, surface, technicality and cumulative fatigue all priced in. The same numbers drive the section table, the elevation-chart Analyse tool, and the stretch-selection tool, so a runner's plan adds up to their goal exactly. Override any one section and the whole model rebalances around the override with the same math.

Fuelling targets come from a short runner questionnaire (bodyweight, sweat rate, salt loss, gut tolerance, caffeine tolerance, expected temperature) plugged into published endurance sports-science ranges — carbs per hour, fluid per hour, sodium per litre, caffeine as a per-body-weight budget. The product library then lets a runner slot specific gels, chews, drink mixes, salt caps and real food into every section from a catalogue of major brands (Precision Fuel & Hydration, Näak, Maurten, Tailwind, SIS and others), with live macro math updating as each item is placed. Sodium is accounted for from all sources — drink mixes, gels, chews and salt caps — not just liquid, because that's the honest way to track it in the field.

The output is a printable crew-handover PDF with one page per aid station: exactly what to hand the runner, what to swap out, expected arrival time, and the section-and-race totals so far. Works offline. A crew who has never crewed an ultramarathon before can execute cleanly with one card per stop.

Where Intake sits in the market

Intake launched in 2026 as the first ultramarathon fuelling planner built around per-race packs. No other tool on the market combines course intelligence (elevation profile, every aid station and what it serves, official cutoffs, terrain- aware split prediction from real historical finishers) with section-by-section personalised fuelling and a printable crew-handover PDF at this depth. Generic race-fuelling calculators give runners a per-hour carb, fluid and sodium target. Intake gives them a full plan for a specific race, distributed across the actual course.

The product is brand new — currently three packs are live (UTMB, CCC and TDS, covering Chamonix race week 2026) and the catalogue is being expanded to every major ultramarathon worldwide over the following months. Each pack is a purpose-built deep-dive product rather than a template, so new races land race-by-race deliberately.

The catalogue expands by following the race calendar. Upcoming packs will cover the UTMB World Series (60+ qualifying events worldwide), UK Centurion Running events, the classic American 100-milers (Western States, Hardrock, Leadville, Cocodona 250), the World Trail Majors and the big European classics.
